The Artist Series is a collaboration with Michel Tuffery a Wellington born Polynesian artist. It is made up of a series of three Te Manaia (seahorses), there are ten signed and numbered prints of each.
The handplanes are designed to be used for bodysurfing and look fantastic hanging on the wall as a piece of art.
From the artist
"I’ve created three designs of the Te Manaia (seahorses) as visual metaphors to acknowledge the two Taniwha who once existed and in reference to Tangaroa (Rarotonga), the tuakana or old ones. Ngake and Whātaitai is inspired by the creation story of Te Whanganui a Tara harbour (Wellington). A time came when their curiosity was turned towards the southern lake end, where the cliffs came down to meet the waters edge. They could hear the crashing of the waves, and the sea birds flying overhead, they were known to ask the birds “what is so special about the sea?” and the birds would reply “the sea is vast with many fishes, the sea is the home of Tangaroa”. Tangaroa is known as the God of the Sea. It was Ngake who broke free from the lake to swim in the endless sea. Whātaitai transformed into a bird, Te Keo who flew to the nearest mountain, Matairangi (Mount Victoria)."
All the handplanes are made from New Zealand grown Paulownia wood and handmade in Wellington by Chris Mark. After the shaping process the boards are sealed with Entropy Bio resin for strength and longevity, each board is Ecoboard verified and the straps are made from recycled wetsuits.
